In July 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto, photographing the last unexplored major body in our solar system. Taking over 25 years from its original conception to its phenomenal photographic fly-by, New Horizons upended the space industry. We will explore the story behind the most unlikely expedition into our solar system, the development of the mission from scrap paper to the spacecraft itself.

This weekend program provides visitors with an opportunity to listen to an astronomy talk and enjoy stargazing. Visitors will spend time in both the main building and observatory visiting the 1.88m (74") telescope, learning its history and getting to see celestial objects firsthand (weather permitting).

Solar System Social is a space-themed speaker series that brings exciting ideas and research from the field of planetary science to the general public.This special event will be a panel discussion on the ethics, logistics, and politics of who deserves to explore space.

This weekend tour introduces families to the wonders of astronomy through an indoor planetarium experience, craft activities for younger visitors and stargazing. Visitors will spend time in both the main building and observatory visiting the 1.88m (74") telescope, learning its history and getting to see celestial objects firsthand (weather permitting).

CAO is holding a joint fundraising event for our members and members of the Beaver Valley Bruce Trail Volunteers. These are the people who tend the trail near CAO and have visited us for an astronomy night last year. As a means of fundraising, we are presenting a day on the trails followed by a night under the stars. RASC members will be offered one of two guided hikes, a short one and a long one, at a trail near to the CAO but not the “normal” Margaret Paull side trail that we frequent.

Quench your thirst for astronomy! On Friday, August 17, at The Great Hall! It'll be another fun evening of pints, astronomy news, mind-expanding talks, games, prizes, and Dunlap merchandise for sale! Plus, following all the talks, there will be plenty of time for you to have all your cosmic questions answered by astronomers from the Dunlap Institute and the University of Toronto. We'll see you there!

Everyone is invited to join us and Durham Skies on the evenings of both August 17th and 18th for stargazing at the edge of Lake Ontario. Take a free look through different kinds of telescopes (including solar-filtered scopes) to get close-up looks at sunspots, craters on the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn! Peer deep into space and try your hand at spotting faint star clusters and nebulae. You can even bring your own telescope along and we'll give you expert advice on how to use it better.

Venus will be in the west at sunset. Venus will be the brightest object in the sky after the moon and the sun.
