RASCTO Speaker's Night: Supernova Forensic Files [Online Only]
Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Andrews, Associate Astronomer, NOIRLab/Gemini-N
Title: Supernova Forensic Files
Abstract: Massive stars, stars at least 8-10 times larger than our Sun, end their lives in some of the brightest explosions in the Universe. While the supernova signals the death of the star, we can use the observations of the supernova evolution and its interaction with the surrounding material as a type of forensic investigation into the last moments of the star's life. By utilizing the supernova explosions, we can further understand massive stars in galaxies other than our own Milky Way, and learn what strange and exciting things they do in the decades before explosion. This may even help us anticipate a supernova explosion in our own galactic backyard!
