ASX Star Talk: Computer Vision on Mars (TALK CANCELLED)

Sadly, the Star Talk which was originally planned for 7:10-8:00 tonight is cancelled because Professor Jonathan Kelly is sick and cannot make it to the event. HOWEVER, for those who are interested, we will still be holding the telescope observing session from 8:00-9:00pm and we will be meeting in the lobby of McLennan at 8:00pm.

TRCA: Astronomy on The Spit (SOLD OUT)

Tommy Thompson Park has the lowest light pollution of any locale in the City of Toronto. Come take advantage of a unique opportunity to learn about and view deep space! The night begins with an indoor presentation preparing you to immerse yourself in the wonders of the Milky Way and other galaxies. From there, we shuttle you 4 km to the south end of the Leslie Street Spit, where astronomers will share their expertise and telescopic views. What’s better than a night under the stars?

Join two University of Toronto astronomers for an evening of star-gazing. We'll teach you the basics of how to find your way around the night sky, finding constellations, planets, and more. Weather permitting, we'll have our telescope set up on the patio to show you Saturn. This program is appropriate for all ages.

RASC Mississauga: Explore the Night Sky Astronomy Course

Earthshine Astronomy and Space Science Organization and The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) present this four night course open to budding astronomers ages 12 and up. The course is taught by members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Mississauga Centre. If the sky is clear, there will be observing for 30 minutes after the end of the session. Hamilton Amateur Astronomers: View the Perseid Meteor Shower

Watch the Perseids meteor shower with the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers at the Binbrook Conservation Area from 8 to 11pm on Saturday August 12. Admission is free so bring the whole family for a fun evening under the stars! There will also be a meteorite display, night sky tour and members will set-up their telescopes for observing celestial objects. Bring a blanket or lounge chair as lying down is one of the best ways to enjoy the meteor shower.

UofT Annual AstroTour Keynote: New Ways to Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

How common is life in the universe? Is there other intelligent life? For over 50 years, astronomers have been conducting the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). These searches have primarily been focused at radio wavelengths, but in the last decade astronomers are thinking of new ways to search for extraterrestrial communication. I will give an overview of humanity’s quest in finding extraterrestrial intelligence, as well as future methods and programs that are on the horizon.
