Spectroheliographs Coming Soon!
The RASC Toronto Centre has invested in two Spectroheliographs for use in public outreach at both the CAO and DDO.
A spectroheliograph (SHG) is an instrument used with a telescope and camera to capture an image of the Sun at a very narrow wavelength. The instrument can be tuned to focus on a range of specific wavelengths including Calcium-K or Hydrogen-Alpha.
The spectroheliographs have been acquired from MLAstro and will be installed permanently in the Geoff Brown Observatory at the CAO as well as on a mobile unit at the DDO as part of the solar observing programs.
These instruments are not visual so there is no "eyepiece" to look through, however, both installations will be equipped with a video monitor to allow members and guests to see the image of the Sun as seen by the SHG. This will complement our white light and H-Alpha views available through our solar scopes.
We are presently working on commissioning these instruments with a view to deployment in the spring. Stay tuned for more updates!
