Speaker's Night: "Water, Water Everywhere? A History of the Hunt for Lunar Water from Harold Urey to Artemis and Beyond"

Speaker: Conor W. Hayes, MSc, PhD candidate, York University (they/them)

Abstract: As humanity prepares to set foot on the Moon once again in the coming years, a major driver of the landing site selection has been the presence (or lack thereof) of water on the lunar surface or in the near subsurface.

Unlike other planets like Mars where the existence of water, either past or present, is fairly uncontroversial, the question of whether or not water does or has ever existed on the Moon is more contentious.

In this talk, I will present a history of the search for lunar water, highlighting key missions and technologies, as well as what the future may hold as we move into the Artemis era.
