DDO: Astronomy Speaker's Night - Canada’s Role in the James Webb Space Telescope Mission (ONLINE)
Speaker name: Julie Claveau
Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering.
Canada is at the forefront of space research and innovation. We often hear about the beginning of space missions, followed by the results and new discoveries years later, but we seldom hear of what goes on in between. Julie Claveau will talk about Canada’s role and contributions in the James Webb Space Telescope mission, as well as the mission’ science objectives. She will conclude by giving a peek into the lengthy process of getting a mission ready for launch, including her role as Deputy Mission Manager.
Julie Claveau graduated with a degree in Physics and Astronomy and is currently Program Officer for smartEarth at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). As an advocate for diversity and inclusion, she is also Co-Chair of the CSA’s Women in STEM committee. Her previous roles include Program Scientist in Space Astronomy where she acted as Deputy Mission Manager for the James Webb Space Telescope, Earth Observation Mission Planner for the RADARSAT-2 mission and Project Manager for the RADARSAT-1 Open Data project. She also worked in military operations as Naval Warfare officer for the Canadian Navy and in public administration. She loves talking about space, sharing her story and mentoring young professionals. She currently supports organizations like Skype a Scientist, SEDs Canada and Zenith Pathways. She is also involved with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs space4women initiative. Her passion for space started at a young age, stargazing for hours, which then followed with a passion with the physics of space and our place in the universe.
