DDO: Astronomy Speaker's Night - High Redshift Galaxies and the Early Universe (ONLINE)
Speaker: Sunna Withers
Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering.
In recent years, the world's largest and most powerful telescopes have started to identify high redshift galaxies in the early Universe, up to a time when it was less than a billion years old. This is an important epoch in the history and evolution of the Universe, marking the time where the first stars and galaxies were forming out of primordial gas from the Big Bang. These observations have led to a great deal of progress in investigating high redshift galaxies, however, they have failed to solve many mysteries due to observational challenges in observing these distant objects. This talk discusses what is currently known and unknown about high redshift galaxies, and some possible breakthroughs that could be made with the James Webb Space Telescope.
Sunna Withers is a first year MSc student at York University studying high redshift galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope. This currently involves using simulated JWST observations to predict ways to find high redshift galaxies in data that will be collected during the telescope's first year of observations. Once data has been collected, these predictions will be applied to the JWST observations to find high redshift galaxies.
