DDO: Astronomy Speaker's Night - The Search for Another Earth (ONLINE)
Speaker: Dr. Michael Reid
Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering.
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered whether there might be someone looking back at you? For thousands of years, human beings have scoured the cosmos for signs of life, but only in the last few decades has tangible progress been made. In this talk, Dr. Michael Reid will describe the methods used to search for life elsewhere in the universe and review the progress so far. We’ll talk about the exciting upcoming generation of new telescopes that we hope will definitively answer the question “Are we alone in the universe?”
Dr. Michael Reid is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. In his teaching, he specializes in developing astronomy courses that are accessible to all students, not just those in the physical sciences. In his role as the Public Outreach Coordinator for the Dunlap Institute, he breaks down complex ideas such as the Big Bang, black holes, and the search for extraterrestrial life, to make them easily understandable by people of all ages and backgrounds.
