Speaker's Night: A Brief History of Galaxy Quenching over Cosmic Time (ONLINE)

Speaker: Vivian Yun Yan Tan, MSc, PhD Candidate, York University

Come and learn why galaxies come in different colours and shapes, and what quenching of galaxies is! This talk will cover some of the ways being in a cluster leads to so many of the galaxies inside becoming "red and dead" and includes exciting examples of galaxy quenching happening right now, such as in mergers and with ram-pressure stripping and even AGN (active galactic nuclei) feedback. We will cover a bit of ongoing current research on mapping out the 2D stellar mass distribution of cluster galaxies to see how galaxies morphologically transform (or don't) when they go from star-forming to quiescent. If you have ever wondered how long ago in the past would we have to look before we stop seeing these red quenched galaxies and only see star-forming ones, make sure to tune in!
