DDO: Astronomy Speaker's Night - Telescope Spaceship: An Observatory Journey (ONLINE)
Speaker: Dr. Elaina Hyde
Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering.
Our ongoing mission to observe planets, stars, and even galaxies has led us to build bigger telescopes and better instruments all across astronomy. The York University Allan I Carswell Observatory provides just one example of what is now possible. We present an exploration of universe, and discuss planets, exoplanets, variable stars and more with our very own telescope spaceships. In this talk we will fly by these mysterious structures and describe some of the equipment that used to make our discoveries. To explore with our own eyes (or instruments) what we have never seen before.
Dr. Elaina Hyde is the director of the Allan I. Carswell Observatory at York University. Her research is "in and above the cloud," combining astrophysics, data science, cloud computing, planetary sciences, optical engineering, telescope operations and telescope observations. Her primary astrophysical research focus is galactic archaeology. She has worked with instrumentation and telescopes around the world, and her experience enables her to provide technical leadership for the Allan I. Carswell Astronomical Observatory.
