UofT AstroTour: Dark energy: The weirdest 70% of the Universe
Join us for the February AstroTour! The entire evening is free and no registration is required. Pavel Motloch, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, will be sharing his expertise on dark energy! Can't make it? We will be livestreaming our talk on our Facebook event page, so be sure to tune in!
It seems that majority of the Universe is made out of dark energy, stuff that is completely unlike anything else we have ever encountered. Why do we believe this and what do we actually know about this enigmatic substance? You will learn about how dying stars reveal an expanding Universe and how its expansion accelerates, instead of slowing down. Then we will discuss how the oldest light in the Universe confirmed this strange tale, before looking into the twisted history of the dark energy and how our best estimate of its properties failed miserably. Let's dive together into one of the biggest mysteries the Universe has to offer.
Pavel Motloch is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics. Pavel is from the Czech Republic and before coming to Toronto did his PhD at the University of Chicago.
After the talk, join us for telescope observing (weather dependent), and other astronomy activities! This portion of the event will also be in McLennan Physical Laboratories (60 St. George Street).
