Speaker's Night: How to Destroy a Planet (ONLINE)
Alysa Obertas (she/her), PhD Candidate, David A Dunlap Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics, Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Toronto
Throughout its 4.5 billion year history, life on Earth has been threatened by cataclysmic events such as extreme volcanic eruptions and asteroid impacts. While events like these drastically altered the face of the Earth, our planet still remained. What would it take to completely obliterate the Earth? In this talk, we will explore some of the extraordinary environments and scenarios in our universe which can cause the complete destruction of the variety of planets that astronomers have discovered in our galaxy.
