RASC National Society: Job Posting - Executive Director
In its 150th year, RASC is a national charitable organization with 1,500 volunteers and a membership of 5,000. More than 100,000 Canadians participate in outreach activities annually. RASC publishes Canada’s pre-eminent astronomy books, magazines and educational resources. The organization’s Toronto headquarters is experiencing significant growth and requires a seasoned, experienced executive to work with its small, committed staff to take astronomy programming, partnerships and outreach to the next level.
Executive Director
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for advancing the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s (RASC) mandate to stimulate interest in and increase awareness of astronomy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mission & Strategy
• Manage and direct national operations and programming to ensure financial sustainability and growth in revenue generation from membership, publishing, merchandise sales and fundraising.
• Develop and implement short-term business plans and long-term strategic planning.
• Responsible for the enhancement of RASC’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with professional, civic and private organizations.
• Responsible for leading the RASC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission.
• Develop and maintain a strong and engaged board of directors to help ensure sustainability, initiate national operating strategies and actively support the organization.
Operations
• Overall responsibility for the design and implementation of RASC marketing, communications and promotional strategies to increase awareness and support revenue generation.
• Oversee, supervise and support 6 staff and 18 contracted employees in the fulfillment of their roles.
• Provide national oversight, direction and support for 29 centres and 15 committees.
• Oversee maintenance and improvements to RASC’s online infrastructure
Financial Performance
• Responsible for fiscal management, operating within an approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
• Responsible for revenue generation and developing resources to support RASC’s mission.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
• 7-10 years leadership experience within the non-profit sector
• Experience leading and motivating boards, committees, staff and volunteers
• Demonstrated success in financial management, ability to manage and oversee budgets
• Able to set and achieve measurable objectives within defined time frames
• Excellent communication skills along with marketing, and public relations experience
• Knowledge of membership programs and databases
• Website and online experience would be considered an asset
• Astronomy knowledge and a passion for the industry are preferred but not mandatory
SALARY & BENEFITS
• 35-hour work week
• Day/evening and possible weekend work hours
• Salary range based on experience, $65,000 to $70,000 a year
