Bosons versus Fermions

All particles fall into one of two camps, Bosons or Fermions. They behave very differently: Fermions avoid each other and this is what stops the atoms we are made of (and also stars) from collapsing. Bosons, on the other hand are “sociable” and like to be in the same place: at very low temperatures they form Bose-Einstein condensates, which were made in the lab for the first time in 1995, and may also clump together to form Bose stars that are hypothesized to contain much of the mysterious dark matter in the Universe.

Why are some materials magnetic? Why do some materials conduct electricity? In trying to answer these questions, science has discovered that matter can take many forms beyond just solid, liquid, and gas. These exotic forms of matter give rise to particles that couldn’t exist anywhere else. In this talk James Lambert gives a grand tour of the many strange and beautiful states of matter we’ve discovered over the last century, and a peek at the states to come.
