York University: Astro Workshop 2018

Join an experienced team of astronomy educators for a professional development workshop that will improve your skills, material, and confidence in teaching astronomy!

The workshop will include:
• Three-days of hands-on experiential activities for your classroom led by Astronomy professors and educators
• Several new inquiry-based activities that promote critical thinking and teach astronomy as professional scientists perform it
• Practice with innovative teaching strategies to inspire the next generation to study science by introducing them to the latest and most exciting discoveries in Astronomy
• Opportunities to discuss, share and collaborate with colleagues in the exploration of teaching astronomy
• Post-program community of practice with facilitated discussion group and implementation support
• Optional visit to York University Observatory and Solar Telescope observing
• Free Classroom Resource Kit for teachers ($30 value)

Instructors
Paola Rodríguez Hidalgo (Humboldt State University & University of Washington Bothell), Matt Russo (SYSTEM Sounds, Seneca College), Paul Delaney (York University), and a team of astronomy professors, professional astronomers, and graduate students that are excited to be part of a new community of astronomy educators!

Who can attend: It is open to everyone and will be geared towards the grade 9-12 Ontario curriculum.
Fee: The initial cost of $150 (+ tax) will be reimbursed for teachers without access to professional development funding.
