UofT AstroTour: Night Skies Over Turtle Island: Indigenous perspectives on the cosmos
The night sky is shared by everyone on Earth and every culture has its own experience with the stars and sky.
In this special AstroTour event, you’ll explore the night sky from the perspective of the Indigenous people of North America.
Hear a panel moderated by the Dunlap Institute’s Prof. Renée Hložek and featuring Prof. Hilding Neilson (University of Toronto), Mr. Frank Dempsey (RASC) and Prof. Karyn Recollet (Dunlap Institute) speak about how Indigenous peoples of North America view the night sky and use that knowledge in their cultures. Learn how that knowledge is enhancing our understanding of astrophysics and Science in general. Learn about the many ideas shared by Indigenous and western astronomy. And, discover the constellations and sky knowledge of Indigenous peoples.
Plus, explore the night sky for yourself through U of T telescopes, and through a live planetarium show presented by a U of T astronomer. Telescope viewing is weather-permitting; and registration for planetarium shows is required.
This AstroTours talk is being held in conjunction with the Indigenous Astronomy Workshop and Indigenous Education Week at the University of Toronto which will bring together members of Indigenous communities, scientists and educators to change how we share and apply Indigenous sky knowledge in academia.
The U of T Astronomy Public Tour, or AstroTour, is a monthly event operated by the graduate students of the U of T Astronomy Department. The Tour features a public lecture by a member of the Department on topics ranging from their research to great moments in astronomical history. Following the lecture, tour-goers can peer at the night sky through the Department’s balcony and dome telescopes, or watch a planetarium show run live by astronomer. Admission to the tour is free. Seating for the lecture is on a first-come, first-served basis (doors open ten minutes before the start of the lecture), and the telescope observing is walk-in.
