Toronto Centre Astrophotography Club

Starting this December, we will be launching a new Astrophotography Club for all RASC Toronto Centre members, regardless of whether you're a beginner looking to get started, or a seasoned expert looking to improve your skills, learn a new technique, or practice new software! Our astrophotography club will meet one Saturday evening per month (clear skies or not!) at the David Dunlap Observatory. 

Our first session will be held at the DDO on Saturday December 12th starting at 7:00pm and will be taught by Steve McKinney. Session 1 will be an ‘Astrophotography 101’ session where topics of discussion will include both a comprehensive introduction and hands-on practicum on the essential equipment, camera options, accessories, lenses (or telescopes), filters and software packages you'll need to get started. We will also delve into basic techniques for image stacking and image editing which will provide basic know-how on how to get started on some easier targets that same night.

The club is intended to be heavily practical so members are strongly encouraged to bring their own equipment to each session. If it’s a clear night, we will also be heading outside to practice some techniques. This will be a good opportunity to ask questions on specific challenges you may already be encountering. Each month, a new topic or skill set will be presented by a different speaker with the intention of progressing into more advanced techniques.

Here is a list of items to bring with you to Session 1:
• DSLR camera and lens(es)
• Charged batteries
• Tripod
• PC laptop computer
• USB/FireWire camera cable
• Programmable shutter release/timer
• Red flashlight or head lamp
• USB memory stick

If you do not have everything on the list, please do not be discouraged. All sessions are also intended to help members choose (or upgrade) to the right equipment for their individual interests and budget. All members are welcome to join.
