Beaches Library: Is The Solar System Typical?
Over the last twenty years, we have discovered thousands of planets orbiting other stars. We are now in a position to analyse this population statistically, look for trends, and ask whether our Solar System is typical among the galaxy or whether it stands out as unique. Join Daniel Tamayo, a CPS Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto's Centre for Planetary Sciences, for a talk about the violent pasts of many planetary systems, controversial theories on the early stages of our own Solar System, and perspectives on whether the Solar System is particularly suited for life in a cosmic context.
Presented in collaboration with the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
