Lunar Eclipse Primer Sunday September 27

Submitted by astroyyz@gmail.com on 21 November 2014

Much has already been written about the lunar eclipse on the evening of Sunday September 27.  Like this article, and this great video posted by NASA.

Keep in mind, that unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse will take some time to unfold.  From start to finish it can be hours.  So you’ll need to get comfortable.  Chair, blanket, hot beverage, binoculars or a telescope if you have them, but this is one celestial event that is wonderful to observe with the unaided eye.   Look for colouring on the moon during the eclipse.  Depending on particulate matter in the atmosphere, they all look a little different.

In the GTA, there are many opportunities to observe this event.

The David Dunlap Observatory is having a lunar eclipse night – it’s sold out.  If you don't have a ticket for that, there are many other options.

York Observatory will be having Luna Palooza at Pan Am stadium.

Our volunteers will be co-hosting an event with the Blue Mountains library up in the Thornbury area at our member observatory, the E.C. Carr Astronomical Observatory (CAO). We will also be setting up telescopes for the Ontario Science Centre's Total Lunar Eclipse: A Celestial Celebration.

The Dunlap Institute will be having a Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party downtown at St. George campus and the Scarborough Campus will be running Lunar Eclipse Live.

In the west end, the Mississauga Centre of the RASC is having a lunar eclipse event, as will McMaster's Sidewalk Astronomy.

There won't be another lunar eclipse visible from Toronto until 2019, so fingers crossed for clear skies!
