Speaker's Night: Council of the Giants

A talk by Marshall L. McCall
Department of Physics and Astronomy
York University

As astronomers have pushed their view outward to the edges of the universe, our own back yard has been neglected.  Now, a careful new look at the organization of bright galaxies in the neighbourhood of the Milky Way has led to revelations about our place in the universe.  All bright galaxies within 20 million light years are confined to a thin sheet of which we are a part.  Furthermore, the largest surround us.  In this richly illustrated talk, the arrangement of nearby galaxies is presented, and implications for how we came to be are discussed.

Talks start at 7:30 socializing starts at 7:00.
