Sky Cultures and Knowledges
Learn about the World Asterisms Project and hear from expert panellists about storytelling and astronomy.
In 2021, the World Asterisms Project was launched by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s (RASC) Inclusivity and Diversity Committee as a celebration of the sky cultures of the world.
An asterism is a star or stars that have been named. Throughout the world different cultures have looked up at the sky, and have seen patterns - constellations of stars - and handed down different names and stories.
The project has examined more than 570 of the world’s cultures and recorded more than 11,300 asterisms and 1,500 names for the Sun, Moon and planets.
This virtual event will offer the opportunity for anyone interested in the world’s sky cultures and stories to learn about this project and hear from a panel of experts on the theme of storytelling and astronomy.
