Hamilton Amateur Astronomers: Introduction to Deep-Sky Image Processing with PixInsight

IC405-410-417, Photo credit: Ron Brecher

PixInsight has become a popular image processing software package in recent years, especially for deep-sky astrophotography. Ron Brecher has used PixInsight for all of his deep sky processing since 2009. In this demonstration, Ron will show you how you can reveal the hidden treasures in your deep-sky images with just a few processing steps: crop bad edges, correct gradients, balance the colour, supress the noise, “stretch” the histogram and adjust colour, brightness and contrast. He will also take a few side trips to talk about using masks, deconvolution and sharpening, and managing noise in your images.

Our speaker this evening will be Ron Brecher
Ron Brecher has been imaging since 2004, with his main interest being long-exposure, deep-sky astrophotography. His images usually have integration of 10 to 40 hours, and up to 104 hours. Ron’s images and articles have been published in print and on-line in Canada and internationally by Sky & Telescope, Astronomy, Astronomy Technology Today, Sky News, the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, the Chinese National Astronomy Magazine, Astronomy Now! and others. Ron presents and teaches at conferences and star parties across North America and in Europe.

Non-members are welcome
Non-members are welcome to join us at our general meeting events to see what we’re all about. You’ll find a club full of enthusiastic amateur astronomers passionate about this fascinating science and hobby. We’re confident you’ll want to become a member of the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers and join us in exploring this fascinating hobby.

Door Prizes
There will be a draw for door prizes at the meeting and a free door prize ticket to all who arrive before the 7:30 start time!

Food Share Donations
Donations of non-perishable food for the Hamilton Food Share program will be collected at this meeting. Please drop off any items at the drop-box located near the entrance of the auditorium. All donations gratefully accepted and thanks to your generosity we’ve collected thousands of pounds of food since we began. Let’s keep up the great work as the need continues.
