Submitted by rasc@johnginder.com on 25 June 2020

Ever wonder what’s going on in those beautiful pictures you see on the news from space? In this new series, we’ll be breaking down the some of the most iconic images and visualizations of the cosmos, giving you the inside scoop of what it means and some stories behind the pictures. Join us at 4:00pm ET every Friday for new episodes in the series!

All talks will be streamed live on the Dunlap Institute YouTube channel and archived for future viewing.

The Orion Nebula

We'll be kicking the series off with a dive into the Orion Nebula.

The Remnant of Supernova 1006

In this episode, we'll be examining the Remnant of Supernova 1006.

Hubble's Cosmic Reef

In this episode of A Picture in 1000 words, we're leaving our galaxy to celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 30th anniversary. We'll be taking a look a special image released for this occasion called the Cosmic Reef, and dive into this energetic region. Join us as we explore the underwater beauty...IN SPACE!!!!

The Whirlpool Galaxy

In this episode of A Picture in 1000 words, we're heading to one of our most photogenic galactic neighbours, the Whirlpool Galaxy. We'll be taking a look at a classic Hubble Space Telescope picture with a bit of a twist! Join us as we go around the bend!

The Exoplanets around HR8799

In this episode of A Picture in 1000 words, we're headed to worlds beyond our own! Our mission will be to witness the dance of the Exoplanets around HR8799. Be sure to bring your shades as we get up close and personal with some nearby planets!

The Ring Nebula

In this episode of A Picture in 1000 words, we're headed to the Mona Lisa of nebulas. The Ring Nebula is a gorgeous glowing doughnut in space that unlocks the key to where the elements that make up most of what's around us have come from. Come catch it before it fades away!

The Twisted Disk of AB Aurigae

How the planets formed remains one of the great mysteries of the Universe. It seems to have happened quickly, and scientists have been having a hard time figuring out the physics to make it work. The twisted disk around the star AB Aurigae may help us piece together this puzzle. The image, taken by the Very Large Telescope from the European Southern Observatory helps us catch the moments where this is happening. In this episode, I dig into the stories behind this image at the cutting edge of science.

The Horseshoe Einstein Ring

The universe can be weird, like how light can be bent by gravity. To catch this, you need to be really lucky, and have two galaxies align almost perfectly. In this case, having a lucky horseshoe doesn’t hurt. Join us as we discover the stories behind this near-perfect example of gravitational lensing in this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The X-Ray Sky

If you look at the world with a different lens, you can be surprised at what mysteries and wonders you can find. Bring a map as we go on a treasure hunt in X-rays! Join us as we discover the stories behind this most sensitive image of the whole X-ray sky taken by the eROSITA Space Telescope.

The Butterfly Nebula

If a butterfly flaps its wings in space, what happens? This cosmic butterfly marks the end of the life of a star, but with a bit of a twist. Join us as we discover the stories behind this gorgeous image of the Butterfly Nebula taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Comet NEOWISE

It’s a bird! it’s a plane! No, it’s Comet NEOWISE! Coming from the mysterious outer solar system, this comet is putting on a show like none that we’ve seen in two decades. Join us as we discover the stories behind this gorgeous image of the comet as it lights up the sky.

The Bullet Cluster

Sometimes a single image can change your whole view of the Universe. This image of the Bullet Cluster does exactly that. Join us as explore tales of Dark Matter from a stellar partnership between the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Telescope.

Storms of Jupiter

Sometimes some of the most beautiful views are those that are close to home. Especially when that view rocks you like a hurricane. Join us as we explore this exquisite planetary image from the Juno Spacecraft.

The Pleiades

One day, you and your closest thousand stellar friends are travelling through the galaxy. The next thing you know, you find yourself in a cloud of gas. That’s the story of the Pleiades, a star cluster so bright, we’ve seen for as long as we’ve had recorded history. Join us as we take a look at this gorgeous image of the cluster taken by the Palomar Observatory in Southern California.

The Mice

What do rodents and tides have to do with one another? Maybe some galaxies that are in a cosmic dance can tell us. Join us as we take a look at this spectacular picture of this pair of galaxies taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The Map of the Local Universe

Ever wonder where we are in our universe, and who are neighbours are? In this episode, we check out the prime real estate we’ve staked out in our Universe. Join us as we take a look at this cosmic map created by the fine folks at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
