DDO: Astronomy Speakers Night - The Cinematography of the Skies with Dr. John E. Moores (ONLINE)

Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering.

Once thought to be fixed and unchanging, we now know that the objects we see in the night sky change with time. For many processes, the changes occur so slowly that we must observe many examples of a particular kind of object in order to see that change. However, there are phenomena where making repeated observations of the same object can reveal new truths. This is especially true of our robotic explorers on other planets where making movies can reveal faint clouds, billowing dust and other features that could be hidden in static images. Because telescope and spacecraft time is limited and valuable, how we choose to observe these objects informs what we learn.

Dr. John Moores is the York Research Chair in Space Exploration at York University. After having survived a department store telescope in his youth, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science (Aerospace) from the University of Toronto and, later, a PhD in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists as well as a Participating Scientist on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mission, popularly known as the Curiosity Rover. After training on MER (Spirit & Opportunity Rovers) in 2004, he contributed to the 2005 Huygens Mission to Saturn's Moon Titan and the 2008 Phoenix Mission to the Martian Arctic. Dr. Moores is the Director of the Technologies for Exo/Planetary Science NSERC CREATE Program, a member of the Canadian Space Agency's Planetary Exploration Consultation Committee, the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society's Scientific Committee and is the Associate Dean of Research for the Lassonde School of Engineering.
