The Position

SkyNews magazine is looking for a Managing Editor. This is a part-time, contract position. While RASC offices are based in Toronto, the successful candidate will be an experienced, self-directed and independent contractor who can be successful working off-site.

Requirements

• Minimum five years of experience as a managing editor on a magazine staff or as a freelancer with established client relationships in publishing
• Experience in science writing (in general) and astronomy or space science (in particular)
• Outstanding research, reporting, writing and editing skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Knowledge of the production process
• Proficiency with desktop publishing software
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
• Proven planning and organizational skills in a deadline-driven environment
• Journalism degree is an asset

Responsibilities

• Plan a long-range editorial calendar (features and departments) in consultation with the RASC Editorial Board
• Oversee the creation of up to six issues of SkyNews in 2020
• Work with the Art Director to complete magazine redesign for the March/April 2020 issue
• Develop story ideas and assignments for contributors in accordance with editorial budgets
• Edit articles in accordance with publication standards
• Collaborate with art director on layouts, artwork and magazine design
• Supervise and collaborate with magazine copy editor
• Maintain journalistic standards and code of ethics
• Exhibit professionalism
• Collaborate with the online editor to enhance magazine content for the web
• Advise the online editor in the development of web-only content
• Occasional travel for meetings at company office
