Speaker's Night: The dim and empty places: unveiling the nature of the universe in spectacularly modest environments (ONLINE)
Speaker Info: L. Arielle Phillips, PhD, Associate Dean College of Science Associate, Professor of the Practice of Physics and Astronomy, University of Notre Dame
Abstract:
Drawing on my experience as a large-scale structure cosmology researcher and teaching astrophysics in prison, college, and universities, I will guide my audience through various thought experiments that bring us closer to understanding the nature of the universe. We will linger in the dim and empty neighborhoods of our universe to discover what modest structures reveal about the nature of dark matter and what deserted spaces tell us about the fate of the universe.
