Fields Institute: Mathematics and the Mystery of Dark Matter

Donald G. Saari, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Economics; Director of the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences, University of California, Irvine

One of the more compelling scientific mysteries is that of "dark matter." Most everyone has heard of it, but many have no idea what it is nor why we should care. And, what does "mathematics" have to do with this issue? In this expository lecture, not only will dark matter be explained, but it will be shown how and why mathematics must play a central role in this discussion. Some of the conclusions are guaranteed to be surprising.
