Dunlap Institute: Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party

Join the Dunlap Institute on the evening of Sunday, September 27, 2015 to watch the total lunar eclipse. You won’t get another chance to see this spectacular celestial phenomenon until 2019. Even better, this year’s eclipse is special because it’s taking place during a “supermoon”, when the Moon is about as close to Earth as it gets. During this time, the Moon will appear subtly larger than normal.

This event is FREE but we request that guests RSVP on our Facebook Event Page.

We’ll have a small army of astronomers standing by, starting at 8:30 p.m. on the 27th and ending at 12:30 a.m. on the 28th. There will be tons of activities suitable for all ages:

 • View the Moon through our collection of telescopes, seeing it like you’ve never seen it before
 • Interact with astronomers, ask questions, and learn about the cosmos
 • Get tips on how to take great pictures of the eclipse
 • Win cool prizes by submitting your photos of the eclipse to our photography contest
 • Take a virtual tour of the Moon using our Oculus Rift virtual reality headset
 • Swim through the cosmos using World Wide Telescope and a motion controller

Guests are welcome to arrive at any time after 8:30 p.m. The important points during the eclipse are:

 •  9:07 p.m. — Partial eclipse begins: the Moon is partly shadowed.
 • 10:11 p.m. — Eclipse reaches totality: the Moon is fully shadowed.
 • 11:23 p.m. — Totality ends.
 • 12:27 p.m. — Partial eclipse ends.

Photography Contest
While you’re admiring the eclipse, why not take a picture or two and enter them in our Lunar Eclipse Photography Contest? There are prizes for both kids and adults. Find out more here.
