DDO Speaker Night - The Search for Planet 9 (WAITLIST)

Speaker: Paul Delaney, University Professor, Physics & Astronomy, York University

History records that Pluto was discovered in 1930 and proclaimed to be the ninth planet in our solar system. However, in 2006, the definition of a planet was finalized by the International Astronomical Union and Pluto was reclassified as a "Dwarf Planet," one of many in the solar system. Public debate has continued since and was given added momentum by the fly-by of Pluto by the New Horizon spacecraft in 2015 revealing a wonderfully intriguing world. Since then increasing evidence suggests that there really is another planet to be found lurking in the outskirts of our solar system beyond the orbit of Pluto. This talk will highlight the history of Pluto as the former 9th planet and outline the evidence that is accumulating for the new 9th planet.

This weekend program provides visitors with an opportunity to listen to an astronomy talk and enjoy stargazing. Visitors will spend time in both the main building and the observatory dome, will learn the history of the DDO, and will get to see celestial objects firsthand (weather permitting).
