2014 H.L. Welsh Lectures in Physics

The Welsh Lectures in Physics have been held annually since 1975 in honour of H.L. Welsh, a distinguished former faculty member in the Physics Department. They are the major public event in the life of the Department of Physics and are intended to celebrate discoveries in physics and their broader impact.   They are intended to be broadly accessible to an audience drawn from across the university, other academic institutions and the interested public.

The Welsh Lecturers for 2014 are:

Dr. Rolf  Heuer, CERN
Rolf-Dieter Heuer is the Director General of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. He studied physics at the University of Stuttgart where he graduated in 1974, then obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg in 1977. He then became research scientist at the University of Heidelberg working for the JADE experiment at the Deutsche Elektronen- Synchrotron (DESY). From 1984 to 1998, Prof. Heuer was a staff member at CERN, studying high-energy collisions with the OPAL experiment at the electron-positron storage ring LEP. In 1998 he was appointed full professor at the University of Hamburg. In 2004 he was appointed Research Director for the Deutsche Elektronen- Synchrotron in Hamburg, and in 2009 he became the Director General of CERN. Professor Heuer was awarded the European Physical Society Edison Volta Prize in 2012 and received the UNESCO Niels Bohr Medal in 2013 on behalf of CERN, in recognition of its outstanding global action in promoting scientific cooperation across borders.

Professor Zhi-Xun Shen, Department of Physics, Stanford University
Zhi-Xun Shen is the Paul Pigott Professor in Physical Sciences, and a senior fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy, at Stanford University. He is also the Advisor for Science and Technology of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Joint Center of Energy Storage Research (JCESR). He received his B.Sc. from Fudan University and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He served as the Chief Scientist of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (2010-2012), and the first Director of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (2006-2011). He was the Director of the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (2004-2007). He was a member (and vice chair, 2001-2002) of the Basic Energy Science Advisory Committee of the US Department of Energy (1997-2002). Professor Shen is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He was the 2009 recipient of the E.O. Lawrence award for his pioneering work in Condensed Matter and Materials Sciences, and was awarded the 2011 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize.

The lectures will be on Thursday May 1, 2014, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM in the Earth Sciences Centre, 33 Willcocks Street, Auditorium ES 1050. These  public lectures are addressed to an audience with broad interests in the physical sciences.
